You might be getting spam messages from your comment forms, your contact form, or people sending messages to your website email address e.g. info@yourwebsite.com. This is an unfortunate side effect of having an online presence. You can however protect yourself from them and filter spam messages.
A) Filtering spam from your comments
We recommend you set your comment settings as follows:
- Login to your Control Panel
- In the menu on the left click ‘Comments’
- Click ‘Comment Settings’
- Switch ‘Allow Comments’ to ‘on’
- Switch ‘Moderate Comments’ to on
- Switch ‘Auto Approve Previous Author’ to ‘On’
- Start by switching ‘Always show captcha test (anit-spam)’ to ‘Off’
- If you find you are still getting Comment spam, try turning the last option ‘Always show captcha test (anit-spam)’ to ‘On’
NB If you have enabled comments for any of the pages of your website, you will receive a message when someone posts a comment, unless our system thinks it to be spam (in which case it is in the spam folder in the comments section on your website).
B) Filtering spam from your contact form
We recommend you set your contact form settings as follows:
- Login to your control panel
- Click ‘Settings’
- Click ‘Email Settings’
- Switch ‘Always show captcha test (anti-spam)’ to ‘Off’
- Switch ‘Enable spam filter on your contact page’ to ‘On’
- If you are still getting spam from your contact form:
- Switch ‘Always show captcha test (anti-spam)’ to ‘on’
- Register for an Akismet API Key (follow the link on the same settings page)
NB Messages sent from your contact form are forwarded to the email address you registered with us when you signed up. You can also check your contact form messages from the dashboard of your control panel here: Home -> Scroll all the way down. At the bottom left is the ‘recent messages’ section. Click ‘View All Messages’.
C) Filtering spam sent to your website email address
If you have enabled email forwarding in your Email Settings, then all mail sent to your website email address (e.g. info@yourname.com) is forwarded to the email address you provided. There's no spam settings for this, however it's sensible to use a single email address rather than have all email addresses forwarded. Please follow these steps:
- Login to your Control Panel
- Click ‘Settings’
- Click ‘Email Settings’
- Set a specific email alias, e.g. "info":
- Click ‘Save Changes’
